The Boy Scouts' Free-Speech Fight

The City of Philadelphia wants the Boy Scouts to be prepared — prepared, that is, to change their views on homosexuality or get out of the city-owned building they have occupied for 80 years. "As a city government we cannot allow discrimination in the delivery of services on public property; that is the issue," said Mayor Michael Nutter...

British exorcist warns that atheism brings Satan into the world

LONDON (CNS) -- Atheism is becoming a key cause of demonic influence in the world, a British exorcist has warned. Father Jeremy Davies, exorcist of the Archdiocese of Westminster, which covers most of London, said that the "spirits inspiring atheism" were those who "hate God." In a new 56-page book called "Exorcism: Understanding Exorcism in Scripture and Practice," Father Davies wrote that Satan had blinded secular humanists from seeing the "dehumanizing effects of contraception and abortion and IVF (in vitro fertilization), of homosexual 'marriages,' of human cloning and the vivisection of human embryos in scientific research." The result, he said, was that Europe was drifting into a dangerous state of apostasy whereby "only (through) a genuine personal decision for Christ and the church can someone separate himself from it." In the book published by the London-based Catholic Truth Society, he said sin was the primary reason people lost their freedom to the power of the devil.

Pet Peeve 9,821

This bugs the crap out of me. Gas stations in the greater Dayton area can vary as much as $.10 a gallon(another pet peeve by the way). As a result people flock to the lowest price and people overwhelm said gas station. As many as 5 or 6 cars per gas pump get backed up all the way on to the street. So all these people probably have an extra 10 minute wait to fill up. That necessitates that they either idle as they wait(wasting gas and causing pollution not to mention wear and tear on the car) or they have to start and stop as they advance on the pump(wasting less gas but still causing pollution)

Now let's analyze this situation: On the surface $.10 a gallon less sound like a good deal, right? Let's use me as an example. The Mighty Moosemobile has a 13 gallon tank. When the fuel light comes on there is approximately 3 gallons left, that means that it will take 10 gallons to top off(thank you 6th grade math). Let's say my time is worth $.20 a minute. Factor in wear and tear, the additional hassle of dealing with a cue at the pump and I say that I'm not saving a $1.00, I'm actually loosing about $2.00! So my advice is, drive on down the next gas station even though it's $.10 higher. (plus you're not inconveniencing me as I'm trying get by your dumb ass as your blocking the street)

$8-a-gallon gas Commentary: Eight reasons higher prices will do us a world of good

Americans should be celebrating rather than shuddering over the arrival of $4-a-gallon gasoline. We lived on cheap gas too long, failed to innovate and now face the consequences of competing for a finite resource amid fast-expanding global demand.
A further price rise as in Europe to $8 a gallon -- or $200 and more to fill a large SUV's tank -- would be a catalyst for economic, political and social change of profound national and global impact. We could face an economic squeeze, but it would be the pain before the gain.

This is actual copy from a radio ad for a California Ford dealer.

But did you know that 86% of Americans say they believe in God? Since we all know that 86 out of every 100 of us are Christians, who believe in God, we at Keiffe & Sons Ford wonder why we don't tell the other 14% to sit down and shut up. I guess maybe I just offended 14% of the people who are listening to this message. Well, if that is the case then I say that's tough, this is America folks, it's called free speech. Lindbergh's deranged quest for immortality

Flying had a strange effect on the great aviation pioneer Charles Lindbergh, leading him to team up with a French surgeon and embark on a quest for ever-lasting life... for a chosen few.

What do you know about Charles Lindbergh?

Forget aviation hero. On the side, Lindbergh was a Dr Frankenstein figure, who used his mechanical genius to explore the possibility of conquering death - but only for the select few who were considered "worthy" of living forever.

"Beating death was something he thought about his entire life", says David M Friedman, American author of the new book The Immortalists. "Even as a small child, he couldn't accept that people had to die. He would ask: 'Why do you have to die to get to heaven?'"

Does this Scare you as much as it Scares Me?

Students Fail — and Professor Loses Job

Who is to blame when students fail? If many students fail — a majority even — does that demonstrate faculty incompetence, or could it point to a problem with standards?

These are the questions at the center of a dispute that cost Steven D. Aird his job teaching biology at Norfolk State University. Today is his last day of work, but on his way out, he has started to tell his story — one that he suggests points to large educational problems at the university and in society. The university isn’t talking publicly about his case, but because Aird has released numerous documents prepared by the university about his performance — including the key negative tenure decisions by administrators — it is clear that he was denied tenure for one reason: failing too many students. The university documents portray Aird as unwilling to compromise to pass more students.

A subtext of the discussion is that Norfolk State is a historically black university with a mission that includes educating many students from disadvantaged backgrounds. The university suggests that Aird — who is white — has failed to embrace the mission of educating those who aren’t well prepared. But Aird — who had backing from his department and has some very loyal students as well — maintains that the university is hurting the very students it says it wants to help. Aird believes most of his students could succeed, but have no incentive to work as hard as they need to when the administration makes clear they can pass regardless.

Another Honor Killing

"Tuesday night I sat by Farzaneh and told her that one of us had to die to save the families honor. She kissed my forehead and said if someone had to die it must be her. On my request, that night Farzaneh slept in a room downstairs. I had decided to put an end to her life. Everyone in the family knew what was going to happen."

"During the night I sat several times by her bed and looked at her innocent face. At the time of morning prayer I woke her and her sister up. We talked for the last time and I repeated to her that one of us could live. She laid down and volunteered to die. She kissed my face for the last time and I said good bye to her. I put her hands into her sister’s hands and put a plastic bag on her face. She didn’t show any resistance. We had decided to show it as a suicide. But later we contacted the police and told them the story."

Cat turns into woman in P/Harcourt - 5 killed as cultists clash

This woman was reported to have earlier
been seen as a cat before she reportedly
turned into a woman in Port Harcourt, Rivers
State, on Thursday. Photo: Bolaji Ogundele.
WHAT could be described as a fairy tale turned real on Wednesday in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, as a cat allegedly turned into a middle-aged woman after being hit by a commercial motorcycle (Okada) on Aba/Port Harcourt Expressway.

Nigerian Tribune learnt that three cats were crossing the busy road when the okada ran over one of them which immediately turned into a woman. This strange occurrence quickly attracted people around who descended on the animals. One of them, it was learnt, was able to escape while the third one was beaten to death, still as a cat though.

I should of known, it's so obvious!

Six 'uniquely' human traits now found in animals

Five Things Humans No Longer Need

Vestigial organs are parts of the body that once had a function but are now more-or-less useless. Probably the most famous example is the appendix, though it is now an open question whether the appendix is really vestigial. The idea that we are carrying around useless relics of our evolutionary past has long fascinated scientists and laypeople alike.

No, they didn't list organized religion.

McCain kicks Hagee to curb

“Well, I just think that the statement is crazy and unacceptable. And certainly Reverend Hagee, Pastor Hagee, is entitled to his views. But we’ve reached a point where that kind of statement simply, I would not, I would reject the endorsement of the expression of those kinds of views,” McCain said at a press conference after a rally in northern California. “But also I’d like to make something else clear. My church that I attend is the North Phoenix Baptist Church. My pastor, and spiritual guide, is Pastor Dan Yeary. I’ve never been in Pastor Hagee’s church. Or Pastor (Rod) Parsley’s church. I didn’t attend their church for twenty years. And I’m not a member of their church. I received their endorsement which did not mean that I endorsed their views. But the comments made…most recently by Pastor Hagee are just too much.”

Scientists discover "frogamander" fossil

CHICAGO (Reuters) - The discovery of a "frogamander," a 290 million-year-old fossil that links modern frogs and salamanders, may resolve a longstanding debate about amphibian ancestry, Canadian scientists said on Wednesday.

Modern amphibians -- frogs, salamanders and earthworm-like caecilians -- have been a bit slippery about divulging their evolutionary ancestry. Gaps in the fossil record showing the transformation of one form into another have led to a lot of scientific debate.

The fossil Gerobatrachus hottoni or elderly frog, described in the journal Nature, may help set the record straight.

Cell Phones Have Fueled a Frenzy of "Honor" Killings in Iraq

"A surprising reason explaining the massive increase in the number of honor killings is the availability of cheap mobile phones able to take pictures. Men photograph themselves making love to their girlfriends and pass the pictures to their friends. This often turns out to be a lethal act of bravado in a society where premarital or extra-marital sex justifies killing.

The first known case of sex recorded on a mobile leading to murder was in 2004. Film of a boy making love with a 17-year-old girl circulated in the Kurdish capital, Arbil. Two days later she was killed by her family and a week later he was murdered by his."

Top court urged to strike down law that forced blood transfusion for teen

OTTAWA — A teenaged Jehovah's Witness who says she was traumatized by a blood transfusion that offended her religious principles wants the Supreme Court of Canada to overturn the legislation that forced her to undergo the procedure.

Lawyers for the teen told the court Tuesday that Manitoba child protection law is badly drafted and violates the guarantees of fundamental justice, equality before the law and religious freedom enshrined in the Charter of Rights.

The person at the heart of the case put things in more personal terms after the seven-judge panel had reserved their decision.

"What happened to me I wouldn't really like to happen to anyone else," she said outside the courtroom.

"It was painful - even physically it was painful - but mentally it was something that I believed shouldn't be happening."

Lawyers for the Manitoba government countered that there's nothing unconstitutional about the law, which allows for court-ordered treatment of minors in emergency situations.

"It could never, ever be in the best interests of a child that they make a decision that might cost them their life," Norm Cuddy, counsel for provincial Child and Family Services, told the court.

May I be so bold as to point out that at least you are at least alive to be traumatized my dear. If there is any "sin" here it's all on the government's head. At least they were there to save your sorry misguided ass!

The Saudi woman who wants a divorce - because her husband tried to sneak one look at face after 30 years of marriage

After 30 years of marriage, cynics might say most husbands and wives would have seen quite enough of each other, thank you very much.

But not in the case of one Saudi Arabian man who managed to live with his wife for three decades without setting eyes on her face.

Not that he had much choice about it. His 50-year-old wife followed the tradition of her native village near the south-western city of Khamis Mushayt and kept her features veiled at all times.

Until one night last month, that is, when the husband was finally overcome by curiosity and tried to lift his wife's veil as she slept to take a look at her face.

'We must never let a child die

"It is impossible to imagine a situation in which a child should be allowed to make a medical treatment decision that might lead to his or her death, a Manitoba Child and Family services lawyer told the Supreme Court of Canada yesterday.“It could never be in the best interests of children to make a decision that costs them their life,” Mr. Cuddy told the court. “Even if it is a decision based on religion – whatever their wishes, we must never let a child die.”

So when is a child old enough to make life and death decisions? Can we really expect some one raised in a cult like atmosphere to make a rational choice? Family Refuses to Take Home 18-Year-Old Rape Victim

MAKKAH, 21 May 2008 — Neighbors of Maryam, an 18-year-old girl who was raped in a pedestrian tunnel here recently, are claiming that her family will not take her back because of the stigma associated with victims of sex crimes. Maryam’s family would not speak to Arab News.

Meanwhile, local police claim they have no cause to investigate the crime or find the perpetrators unless they receive complaints from the victim or her family.

“We cannot do anything about the alleged sexual assault that she suffered so long as we do not receive a formal complaint from her or her relatives,” Makkah police spokesman Maj. Abdul Mohsen Al-Mayman told Arab News yesterday.

Maryam was admitted to the King Abdul Aziz Hospital a few days ago for treatment of trauma resulting from sexual assault. She is currently under the custody of local health officials. A doctor at the hospital confirmed that the young woman was undergoing treatment at the hospital and that she is thought to be suffering from mental problems.

“As we cannot keep her in the hospital any longer, we plan to send her to the Taif Mental Health Hospital or hand her over to the Social Care Department. Her case is compounded because she has developed some mental disturbances besides being mentally retarded,” the doctor said, pointing out that the hospital has only eight beds for women patients who are on long-term care.

According to one neighbor, who did not want to be named, the family kicked the girl out 18 months ago on suspicion of being involved with a boy.

Since then, locals say she has been homeless and has showed signs of mental problems.

“The girl was seen most of the time wandering on the streets before she was attacked and admitted to hospital,” a local resident said.

It was also reported that she used to trespass on the premises of the Civil Defense and Red Crescent centers and abuse the workers there. On one occasion she is said to have stabbed a Red Crescent worker, an unnamed Red Crescent source said.

Describing the case of Maryam as not uncommon, the doctor appealed to charitable organizations to make sufficient shelters for homeless women like her.

Director of the Commission for Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice in Makkah Ahmad Al-Ghamdi said parents should not abandon their children just because they were involved in sex crimes.

Their ways should be rectified and should be brought back to the right path, he said.

Flouride Dangerous?

"Many Americans are exposed to fluoride in the ranges associated with thyroid effects, especially for people with iodine deficiency," says Kathleen Thiessen, PhD, co-author of the government-sponsored NRC report. "The recent decline in iodine intake in the U.S could contribute to increased toxicity of fluoride for some individuals," says Thiessen.

"A low level of thyroid hormone can increase the risk of cardiac disease, high cholesterol, depression and, in pregnant woman, decreased intelligence of offspring," said Thiessen.(C)

Common thyroid symptoms include fatigue, weight gain, constipation, fuzzy thinking, low blood pressure, fluid retention, depression, body pain, slow reflexes, and more. It's estimated that 59 million
Americans have thyroid conditions.

Ben Stein insists, ‘Science leads you to killing people’

Ben Stein, a former Nixon aide and game-show host, probably best known for his role as a monotone teacher in “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” released an anti-evolution documentary recently called, “Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed.” The premise, as I understand it, is that those who reject modern biology struggle professionally in the sciences.

Kevin recently saw the movie, and reported back that towards the end, the documentary veered into the insane: “Stein spends the final half hour wandering around Dachau and telling us outright that his real motivation for attacking evolution isn’t any real flaw in the theory, but his belief that Darwinism leads directly to Nazi-ism, eugenics, atheism, the breakdown of morals, and mass slaughter. Can’t have that, so evolution needs to go too.”

Regrettably, Kevin wasn’t exaggerating. Stein recently chatted with Paul Crouch, Jr. about his film on Crouch’s Trinity Broadcasting Network.

Stein: When we just saw that man, I think it was Mr. Myers [i.e. biologist P.Z. Myers], talking about how great scientists were, I was thinking to myself the last time any of my relatives saw scientists telling them what to do they were telling them to go to the showers to get gassed … that was horrifying beyond words, and that’s where science — in my opinion, this is just an opinion — that’s where science leads you.

Crouch: That’s right.

Stein: …Love of God and compassion and empathy leads you to a very glorious place, and science leads you to killing people.

Mystery Solved:All of the World's Problems Caused by Fat People

Obese people are contributing to the world food crisis and climate change, experts say.

The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine calculated the obese consume 18% more calories than average.

They are also responsible for using more fuel, which has an environmental impact and drives up food prices as transport and agriculture both use oil.

The result is that the poor struggle to afford food and greenhouse gas emissions rise, the Lancet reported.

It comes as the World Health Organization predicts the obese population will double by 2015 to 700m.

Indian village proud after double "honor killing"

BALLA, India (Reuters) - Five armed men burst into the small room and courtyard at dawn, just as 21-year-old, 22-week pregnant, Sunita was drying her face on a towel.

They punched and kicked her stomach as she called out for her sleeping boyfriend "Jassa," 22-year-old Jasbir Singh, witnesses said. When he woke, both were dragged into waiting cars, driven away and strangled.

Their bodies, half-stripped, were laid out on the dirt outside Sunita's father's house for all to see, a sign that the family's "honor" had been restored by her cold-blooded murder.

Evolution is supposed to inch forward over eons, but sometimes, at least in the case of a little fish called the threespine stickleback, the process can go in relative warp-speed reverse, according to a study led by researchers at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and published online ahead of print in the May 20 issue of Current Biology (Cell Press).

Vatican: It's OK to Believe in Aliens

The Vatican's chief astronomer says that believing in aliens does not contradict faith in God. The Rev. Jose Gabriel Funes, the Jesuit director of the Vatican Observatory, says that the vastness of the universe means it is possible there could be other forms of life outside Earth, even intelligent ones.

I am so relieved.

Jordan charges man in honor killing of sister

A man who is suspected of drowning his 22-year-old sister for having an extramarital affair was charged Monday with premeditated murder, a judicial official said.

The unidentified woman's brother beat her with the help of his family Saturday and then took her to the Dead Sea where he drowned her, said the official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media.

The state prosecutor also charged the woman's parents and another brother Monday with assisting in the murder by knowing about it and beating the woman before she died, the official said.

The woman was killed after an unidentified man was seen leaving her house, the official said.

An average of 20 Jordanian women are killed by relatives every year in so-called honor killings in this

tribal-dominated society.

I know that dozens of people are killed in U.S. everyday, but for some reason these "honor killings"make me heart sick. The Idea of becoming enraged to the point of killing a loved is just completely alien to me. My sisters probably think I should get smacked around a little, but I don't think I they think I should be killed.(At least I don't think they do anyway)

'Death was the least that she deserved'

For Abdel-Qader Ali there is only one regret: that he did not kill his daughter at birth.

"If I had realised then what she would become, I would have killed her the instant her mother delivered her," he said with no trace of remorse.

Two weeks after the Observer revealed the shocking story of Rand Abdel-Qader, 17, murdered because of her infatuation with a British soldier in Basra, her father is defiant.

Sitting in his garden, he remains a free man, despite having stamped on, suffocated and then stabbed his daughter to death.

I know their culture is not our culture, but these are the people the U.S. is trying to "liberate". Doesn't it seem that they are not quite ready for it?

Nano Worms Find and Kill Cancer

Scientists at UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara and MIT have developed nanometer-sized “nanoworms” that can travel through the bloodstream and — like tiny anti-cancer missiles — zero in on tumors. These can circulate in the body for hours since they do not trigger the immune system.

These nanoworms, composed of magnetic iron oxide and coated with a polymer, are able to find and attach to tumors. The nanoworms are superparamagnetic and show up very well on MRIs.

Using these nanoworms, doctors could eventually be able to target and reveal the location of developing tumors that are too small to detect by conventional methods.

This isn't true,is it?

New procedure sucks Appendix out of stomach through mouth

According to doctors who performed the operation in San Diego, a flexible tube is used to thread miniature surgical instruments down the patient's throat into their stomach. At that point, the fun begins—unless you're an appendix, of course.

Malaysian woman can leave Islam

A religious court in Malaysia has allowed a Muslim convert to leave the Islamic faith, in what is being hailed as a landmark ruling.

Penang's Sharia court ruled that Siti Fatimah Tan Abdullah was free to return to Buddhism, following the collapse of her marriage to a Muslim man.

It was decided she had not had proper counselling during her conversion.

Malaysians are rarely allowed to renounce the faith - those who do can be prosecuted under stringent laws.

And you wonder why I'm an agnostic.

Kids, mom lived with 90-year-old's corpse for weeks in Wis.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Two children and their mother lived for about two months with the decaying body of a 90-year-old woman on the toilet of their home's only bathroom, on the advice of a religious "superior" who claimed the corpse would come back to life, authorities said Friday.

The children — a 15-year-old girl and a 12-year-old boy — cried hysterically Wednesday after a deputy who came to their Necedah home looking for Magdeline Alvina Middlesworth ordered them out because of the stench from her body.

Check out the bishop.

You'd think that 17 kids would be enough

This is a story that keeps rearing it's ugly head(there's a pun or a joke in there somewhere I'm just not sure what it is or if it's in good taste). The Duggars are an Arkansas family that has 17 children.(no adoptions, all natural). She is now pregnant with her 18th child. This poor woman has spent the last 11 years with child. This couple actually think this is god's will. I have a feeling that if the husband had to carry the babies there would be a lot fewer than 18. Would somebody please explain to me why it's in this woman's or god's interest to keep popping out kids?

How about we get a collection together to get that old goat of a husband a vasectomy? I got about two bucks in my pocket I'd kick in.

"As the price of oil goes up, there's got to be a green revolution. I think of what will be the next driver of the American economy, and it's green energy. That's a huge growth opportunity. It's not about the pollution. It's about the energy. Gas will go to $10 a gallon," he said.

Paging Doctor Robot,Paging Doctor Robot

We're a little ambivalent about robots performing surgery autonomously and unattended, but there are clearly cases where it'd be beneficial, and it seems like an inevitable future. Duke researchers working on robo-doc lab feasibility studies announced this week a proof of concept using 3D ultrasound mapping to enable machines to "see" what they're doing. The first test procedures have focused on use of those ultrasound transducers in catheter-based procedures using fluoroscopy, so it sounds like we'll still have a few years before we say ahhh for a machine.

Man pushes creation of panel to prepare city for space aliens

Jeff Peckman is back at it, and this time he is bringing little green men along for the ride.

The Denver man, who sponsored an offbeat ballot initiative that would have required the city to implement stress-reduction techniques, now wants to ask voters to create a commission dealing with space aliens.

Peckman, 54, who is single and lives with his parents, has submitted to the city a draft of the proposed ordinance, which would require the creation of an Extraterrestrial Affairs Commission.

I usually have have no problems proving my geek street cred, but this guy is on another plane of existence compared to me.

'Sex pest' seal attacks penguin

An Antarctic fur seal has been observed trying to have sex with a king penguin.

The South African-based scientists who witnessed the incident say it is the most unusual case of mammal mating behaviour yet known.

The incident, which lasted for 45 minutes and was caught on camera, is reported in the Journal of Ethology. The bizarre event took place on a beach on Marion Island, a sub-Antarctic island that is home to both fur seals and king penguins.

Would this be considered kinky penguin porn?

Babies' bodies in German freezer

The bodies of three babies have been found in a basement freezer in the town of Wenden, in western Germany, prosecutors say.

A woman believed to be the mother of the three has been arrested, a state prosecutor's office spokesman said.

The three were not stillborn, police said, but the cause of death and the infants' ages have not been released.

There have been several similar cases in Germany recently, including a woman jailed for killing her eight children.

Five signs that pot might become legal soon -- and five reasons why it probably won't.

Marijuana occupies a bizarrely paradoxical place in American culture. Its use is widespread, commonplace among the young and ubiquitous in popular culture. Yet it remains highly illegal, and talk of legalization is usually deemed political suicide.

Here are five signs that pot should be legal soon -- and five reasons why it probably won't.

Charter school will focus on homeland security

The first high school dedicated to preparing students for the front lines in the Nation's homeland security has gone from theory to planning in Wilmington.

The Project Manager for the Delaware Academy for Public Safety and Security, New Castle Attorney Thomas Little, signed a contract with Innovative Schools, a professional firm which will coordinate the mechanics of preparing the school for its eventual opening.

The process to find and fund a site for as many as six-hundred young men and women in Wilmington's inner city is underway.

For some reason I find this story a little troubling. How close is this to:"Hitler-Jugend "or "Bund deutscher Arbeiterjugend"?(Hitler Youth, League of German Worker Youth)

Christian Little League: God Trumps Civil Law

In Florida, Jay Kaplan seems to have decided that Little League baseball isn't sufficiently Christian and Jesus-supporting, so he decided to create a Christian alternative: Christian Little League. Well, actually he says that God told him to create Christian Little League, and that's why he refused to change the name when lawyers for Little League baseball told him that he was infringing on the organization's trademark. After all, God's will trumps civil law, so why should he pay any attention to secular lawyers?

God told him to start a League? Why doesn't God tell these people how to cure cancer or feed the hungry?
